Together for freedom of speech and freedom of the press

We would like to thank all individuals and organisations who contribute to the success of the Palm-Award by nominating proposals worthy of the award, through active networking, media coverage or in many other ways!

The patron of the Palm-Award has been the Prime Minister of Baden-Wuerttemberg since the first award. We would like to thank Mr Winfried Kretschmann for taking on this role again in 2024.

“In Germany, freedom of the press has been a fundamental right for over 70 years. And yet it cannot be taken for granted here either. The narratives of the “lying press” and the “system media” create mistrust of our diverse media landscape. This repeatedly leads to aggression against the media and violence against media professionals and increasingly poses a major threat to press freedom and free and unhindered reporting, even on our own doorstep. After all, unrestricted freedom of the press is not something a democracy can do without. It is something that it must defend with all its might. Here in Baden-Wuerttemberg, but also all over the world.

The Johann-Philipp-Palm-Award makes a valuable contribution to this.”
